‘Got Milk’ Campaign Turns Sixteen

In 1993 a San Francisco based advertising agency Goodby, Silverstein & Partners went to work on a brief presented by the Milk Trade Association and created a campaign that is the advertising equivalent of the cure for cancer.

Since 1980 milk sales had been rapidly declining and traditional dairy advertising continued to implement failed strategies that concentrated on the nutritional and health benefits of milk. The success of the ‘got milk’ campaign is communication that grabs the consumer’s attention. The ‘got milk’ campaign turns sixteen this year and is one of the longest and most successful campaigns in American history. The campaign has a 90% recall rate and has been responsible for increasing sales from 65% consumption to 77% in America.

Few advertising campaigns have been able to absorb themselves into the social fabric of the American Society; these campaigns are the standard to which all other campaigns should be measured.

Jack Bauer's New Ride

It'd seem that not every single motor manufacturer had a bad 2008. According to AdWeek, Hyundai posted the US motor industry's highest year-to-year increase in January, selling 24,512 vehicles, a 14.3% improvement versus January 2008. The only other manufacturer to have increased sales was Subaru, which sold 12194 cars and trucks in January - an 8% increase.

The Korean automaker has been making headway in the US market for the past few years now, with the aim to ultimately challenge well-established German and Japanese competitors.

Hyundai's latest effort sees the brand committing to a season-long integration in Fox's hit TV show 24, taking up the slack from Ford, which until recently had enjoyed category exclusivity on the program. It has been revealed that the the Hyundai Genesis will play a pivotal role throughout the season's arc, serving as the primary vehicle for star Kiefer Sutherland's character in the show.

In addition to the product placement, the Hyundai Genesis brand is also featured on News Corp.'s MySpace and Hulu.com.

The Next Advertising Hotshop: Saturday Night Live?

In a move that some ardent viewers considered shocking, cast and crew from "Saturday Night Live" recently crafted three ads for Pepsi that mentions and showcases cans and logos of Pepsi Cola a into three different executions of "MacGruber," a long-running spoof of the old "MacGyver" TV series.

The ads looked just like "SNL" skits but ran during commercial breaks on the Jan. 31 edition of the show. One of the ads also appeared during the recent Super Bowl. AdAge also reports that Pepsi's ad agency, Omnicom Group's TBWA/Chiat/Day, had little if any involvement in the commercials.

"We definitely feel like it's not a one-off," said Pepsi-Cola North America spokeswoman Nicole Bradley, who suggested Pepsi would be interested in working with both "Saturday Night Live" and other TV programs in the future. "It's a very determined step to connect with consumers in a new, contemporary way."

By using a well-established entertainment portfolio in unique ways, brands can certainly get their messaging across in fresh and innovative ways.

Listen To The Good Doctor

Dr. Pepper has launched their latest campaign in the US. The premise behind the campaign is to ‘educate’ the public on how best to consume Dr Pepper.

The brand has enlisted various famous Doctors from pop culture as the spokesperson. Dr Frasier Crane and basketball player Dr J are two celebrities who explain the scientific research behind the discovery that the drink tastes best when consumed slowly.

The campaign launched on TV and outdoor. There is also a fantastic and highly interactive online element with lots of extra information and downloadable content.

Hit Song Is Really An Ad Jingle

R&B singer Chris Brown’s song called “Forever” was released in April, and has gained tremendous popularity of late. The song currently ranks number 3 on UK charts has been tipped to be number one in the not too distant future.

It has recently been revealed, however, that the song was written as a deep mental product placement idea. Brown was supposedly one of three singers hired by Wrigley Gum Brands’ advertising agency Translation Advertising. All the artists created songs based on jingles from Wrigley’s past ads.

I’m sure a lot of non-advertising fans would be writhing in agony at the revelation of yet another marketing scheme, but it’s clearly proven very effective and successful for the brand.

Must Read For Celeb Copycats

With Pepsi as the launch sponsor, Coolspotters is a site which databases not only the real brands and products used by Hollywood A-listers, but also incorporates elements of celeb-spotting as well as the latest product placements and social netwroking. There's also a handy feature in which users can create profiles that link to their favorite celebrities and products.

The site has separate pages for products, celebrities, brands, TV shows and movies and links them to various actors, athletes, business icons, musicians and politicians.

For example, Pepsi's page has links to YouTube clips of Pepsi commercials featuring celebrities and candid photos of Lindsay Lohan and Jessica Alba with the soft drink.

In addition, the site has pages for cars, pets, organizations, places and events that all connect back to celebrities.

Compare Yourself To Becks & Co.

David Beckham, along with a host of other soccer superstars such as Thierry Henry and Cesc Fabregas have all teamed up in a new TV ad for Pepsi in the US. The interesting thing about the spot is the connection it has with a social networking site called Youniverse.

The site is currently in Beta testing at the moment but would eventually offer users exclusive footage and downloads as well as allowing them to compare themselves with their favourite sports stars usinga technology called visualDNA. visualDNA is essentially a set of images that defines the user’s personality, predetermined by the user.

An interesting concept and could this be the way 360 campaigns are executed in future? We'll wait and see...
